Boys and their Toys vs. A Mans wants and his Needs

My Disney World Vacation is getting closer and that means C1's 7th birthday is getting closer.  He knows that when the Disney trip gets here, so does his birthday.

What do kids do when they know their birthdays are around the corner?

The make the list and or ask for shit.  Everything that comes to mind.  Everything that they see on tv or in the newspaper ads.  If it is on the shelf at the store and they like it..........they want it.

I love that C1 wants everything.  He knows he will not get everything and it will help him down the road to figure out the difference between wants and needs.

But for now, he is only a soon to be 7 year old, so C1 want away.

He is changing his wants daily.  He adds items, and subtracts items.  He adds more and then some more.  It started with a new big bike.  After learning how to ride his bike, we realized that it was way to small for him.  We checked out bikes and he saw some he really liked.  Then with the release of Toy Story 3 came the release of new Toy Story toys such as the new Legos, Wii game, figures.  Then he saw a nice Toy Story book at Boarders.  New shows for the Disney trip. And the list goes on and on.

I love this shit.  I love seeing how excited the kids get and how big their eyes get when they see these things.  Is it hard?  Yeah, I would love to be able to buy all of them all they want, but they will learn that it is just not realistic.

Remember wants and needs.

Brings me to this.

I am a wanter.  Not much of a needer.  What the hell does that mean?
Well I want all kinds of shit.  That is the kid in me.  I am always wanting something. A new this and a new that.  A different this and a new color of that. A bigger one and a better one.

My birthday is coming up soon too. So I thought I would let the kid in me come out and make my list of wants. (And then my list of needs)

Want - BIG bad ass crew cab truck.
Need - My paid off Impala to keep running.

Want - A gym membership.
Need - To get my fat f-ing ass on the Wii Fit.

Want - Cash to buy whatever I want.
Need - Cash to buy stuff for the house.

Want - A new flat screen tv.
Need - Be happy with what I have.

Want - A PS3 to play Madden on.
Need - Spend more time with family.

Want - A new ballcap with a different C on it.
Need - To wear what I have and like it.

Want - To play basketball and tennis every weekend
Need - Health Insurance

See there are things that I want.
But being the grown up (stop laughing), mature (stop laughing), smart (stop F-ing laughing) parent that I am, I realize that I dont need these things.

But T, I do want some "Pants Off - Dance Off" and really feel like I NEED some too.

Nice post. I think that we should indluge our wants at times but not excessively. If we just always buy our wants, its not that rewarding - its just more shit (and debt). But if we never do, we don't get in touch with that little kid like you were saying.

I really like this post. It's true that wants and needs are often times different. I'm glad that you have most of your needs met and happy almost birthday!!

Have fun at is so stinkin' hot here right now...make sure you bring one of those water bottle with the fan attached so you can mist the kids all day...see if you can find one BEFORE you get to Disney because they cost like $15 there.

We're still trying to master the art of separating our wants and needs... But having toys is so much fun!

Happy almost birthday!

Very fine post. I need to do this a lot more, turning my wants towards my needs. Great perspective.

YOU DON'T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE??? PLEASE, I PRAY TO GOD YOU HAVE DAM LIFE INSURANCE. You have 4 kids, you fucking moron. What the fuck will happen to them and your wife, if you get sick, or hurt, and can't work or pay the big ass six figure hospital bill? Are you trying to be the World's Worst-Father? You are asking for trouble, dick head. Be responsible, be a man and take care of yourself so you can take care of them, and don't be such a ass-hole.
